Private Extended Tour to Bucovina

Day 1:

Brasov – Suceava. Departure at 8:00 from Brasov. Stop and sleep in Suceava. Arriving at the place where we will be accommodated, visit the city, also The Old Citadele Suceava. In the evening we will have free time. Dinner at a traditional restaurant (Optional).

Suceava

It is the biggest city from the county with the same name, and it is defined by a rich history. The county seat for 400 years, the city was part of the Principality of Moldavia and another 200 years was the capital! Located at the confluence of some extremely important roads, following the Austrian territorial report, between 1775-1918 the city became part of the Crown of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, and also of the Duchy of Bucovina. During the communism there were discovered silex tools very close to the city, that prove the fact that between 100.000 and 10.000 C.E. in the area around Suceava’s river there lived populations dating back to the Middle Paleolithic period. Furthermore, in the same area were discovered settlements from the Neolithic period. The archeological excavations determined the existence of multiple stages in the evolution of the city. There are distinct periods from the I-III centuries, during the free Dancians’ period, unconquered by the Romans. There were encountered discoveries from the Iron Age that prove the existence of a period of continuous inhabitancy of that area. Accounting for the prefeudal period are the artifacts discovered between the VIII-IX, X-XI centuries. Nicolae Costin, as he mentioned the enthronement of Dragoș (1288), spoke about the first people from Maramureș, Saxons or Hungarians that came from the Moldovan lands because they were attracted to the lands and the mountains. Moldova encountered many fearful enemies. The most memorable are the Romans, Cummins, Scythians, Gepids, Polish, Ukrainians, Mongols, Huns, Tatars, Turkish, Hungarians, Austrians, Francs, Russians, Germans, and many others. However, the main attraction of this historical and multimillenary city, is the fortress of Moldova, integrated in the UNESCO patrimony and part of the long and tumultuous history of this area. If you have the time, Suceava is the right place to spend many days in a row, without getting bored!

Putna Monastery

The Private Extended Tour to Bucovina will take you to the monastery, which was built in the XV century, between 1466-1469, being the work of the greatest king of Moldova, the ruler Ștefan the Great and Holy. It is said that during his ruling Moldova became a large construction site, Putna monstary representing his first founding work. The legend says that in order to select the location of the future monastery, a bow with arrows was used. The place where the arrow fell marked the area on which the monastery was established. The shooting of the bow was executed from a nearby hill, place that can still be spotted even today. Initially, the monastery was painted remarkably, abundantly, on a gold background, both on the inside and outside. However, in 1654 it was partially demolished as a result of the ruler’s belief that the monastery’s walls (or the underground) concealed high amounts of gold. Nevertheless, the monastery was reconstructed afterwards, receiving another two renovations. Putna was extremely well protected by the strong defense walls and imposing towers, a part of them being visible even today.
